Neuromancer, by William Gibson, is an EXCELLENT book. I always though that the ideas behind the movie “The Matrix” were a complete creation of their creators. How wrong I was. This book is the prequel to The Matrix. Or at least its the place where many of the ideas came from.
The book portrays the story of a punished “console cowboy” – a computer hacker who know how to navigate the plains of the matrix, the global computer network. After wronging his employers, and his talents to “ride” taken from him, he is suddenly given the option to regain them by performing a special job. This is the basic plot of the book and I will not give you more details so as not to spoil the story.
But to me the more interesting thing how much Gibson got right about technology. The existence of a global computer network, the smart computer interfaces, even software as a service (renting programs). It will be interesting to see if some of the other “predictions” of this novel will become true. Time will tell.
Oh, and it seems a film based on the book will start filming this year. I’m waiting…
A must read for any science fiction fan like me. As usual, you can by this book from amazon, or any other book shop in the matrix (also know as “the internet”).
